The Welsh Proms

30th June, 2015

Soprano Angharad Morgan and tenor David Fortey will be guest soloists in ‘A Night in Vienna’ at the Welsh Proms, St David’s Hall in Cardiff on Friday 24 July.

They will join conductor Owain Arwel Hughes and the Royal Liverpool Philharmonic Orchestra for a dazzling evening celebrating Vienna's Golden Age of music. Expect some popular waltzes and polkas by Johann Strauss and favourite arias and duets by Franz Lehár including ‘You Are My Heart’s Delight’ from The Land of Smiles, ‘On My Lips Every Kiss is Like Wine’ from Giuditta and the beautiful Merry Widow Waltz, ‘Love Unspoken’.

Angharad and David are both extremely popular concert artists - Angharad with her beautiful lyric soprano has just finished performing the role of Marguerite in Swansea City Opera's touring production of Gounod's Faust, whilst many will recognise David, with his melodious tenor voice, as a member of award-winning ensemble Only Men Aloud.

“It’s a bit of a dream come true,” admits Angharad. “I’ve grown up with the Welsh Proms. As a child I was taken to a prom concert every year and today I consider the Welsh Proms to be a highlight in the musical calendar.” So how does her other half, Last Choir Standing winning-tenor David Fortey feel about performing at the Welsh Proms?

“It's a great privilege to be a part of this year’s programme especially as the Welsh Proms is celebrating its 30th Anniversary. Not only will this be my first time performing as a soloist at the Welsh Proms but it is also my first time performing as a soloist at St David's Hall, which is a real honour in itself and to share it with my wife will make it even more special.”

‘A Night in Vienna’ promises to be an evening of real style, glamour, and music that will make you want to dance the night away.

Angharad and David also sing together as a vocal duo called Cantare. They first started singing together in 2001 when they studied at the Royal Welsh College of Music and Drama. As performers they are varied and versatile, offering a unique blend of music from opera to musical theatre combined with their inimitable charisma and warmth, providing audiences with that sought after ‘something for everyone’. If performing at the Welsh Proms wasn’t exciting enough, Angharad and David will platform four dazzling concerts in August with a special programme, ‘Cantare at the Musicals’ alongside accompanist Ryan Wood.

“Last year we performed a 'Night at the Opera' so the natural step for us was to put together a show based around musicals. We’ve picked an exciting programme with some well-known and some lesser known songs, all of which are simply beautiful,” explained Angharad. David says “that it’s always great to cross over into different styles of music and perform songs that are well known, fun and most of all can be enjoyed by music lovers of all ages.”

So what can we expect from Cantare this summer?

“We've got music from Lerner and Loewe, Rodgers and Hammerstein, Cole Porter, Gershwin, Sondheim and not forgetting the wonderful Stephen Swartz, there really is something for everyone!”

You can catch Cantare at the Vanguard Centre, Caerphilly on August 1st, All Saints Church in Swansea on August 7th, Gambier Parry Hall, Gloucester on August 8th and All Saints Church in Porthcawl on August 29th.

Here’s to a great summer of music!
