Birthday Concert

31st October, 2015

On October 20th Bryn Terfel celebrated his 50th birthday with a big concert in the splendid surroundings of the Royal Albert Hall, one of the very many venues where he has triumphed.

The backbone of this extremely varied concert was provided by long-time collaborators Sinfonia Cymru conducted by Gareth Jones, and these musicians were a revelation with a roller coaster of styles, genres, moods and atmospheres from the Polonaise from Tchaikovsky's Eugene Onegin, West End big hitters to popular classic ballads.

The performers either singing or playing solo or with Bryn were largely from his homeland: Only Men Aloud, former royal harpists Catrin Finch and Hannah Stone, soprano Rebecca Evans, Daniel Evans, John Owen Jones and the compère for the birthday party was Newport's Hollywood star Michael Sheen.

Other performers include recipient of the Bryn Foundation Latvian accordionist Ksenija Sidorova and fellow countryman tenor Aleksandr Antonenko, soprano Danielle de Niese, the award-winning trumpet player Alison Balsom, Welsh folk group Calan, Hannah Waddingham, long-term musical collaborator accompanist Malcolm Martineau and former Police front man Sting.
