The Catalan baritone Lluís Calvet i Pey began his studies at the Conservatori Professional de Sabadell with singing teacher, Elisenda Cabero. In 2017 he was awarded the Young Promises scholarship by the Fundació de Música Ferrer-Salat to study for a singing degree at the Conservatori Superior del Liceu with singing teacher, Maria Dolors Aldea, vocal coach Marta Pujol, and chamber teacher Alan Branch. In 2019, Lluís participated in projects with the MA Opera course at the Conservatori Superior del Liceu, which included playing the role of Belcore in Donizetti’s L’Elisir d’Amore, under the stage direction of Paco Azorín.
In September 2020, Lluís moved to Cardiff to begin his final year of undergraduate studies at the Royal Welsh College of Music & Drama as part of an ERASMUS programme and was subsequently invited to join the David Seligman Opera School. Lluís was awarded a scholarship to complete his MA in Advanced Opera at the RWCMD by Clive Richards Foundation and John & John Foundation.
Lluís is currently a member of the International Opera Studio of the Staatsoper Hannover, where his roles include William in The Fall of the House of Usher, Fiorello in Il Barbiere di Siviglia, Belcore in L’elisir d’amore, Lovec in Rusalka, M. Javelinot, Second Commissioner and Jailer in Dialogues des Carmélites, Sherifa in Zad Moultaka’s Hamed und Sherifa, Ruggiero in Halévy’s Die Jüdin and Ping in Turning Turandot.
Other recent engagements include Small Prisoner/ Bitter Prisoner in From the House of the Dead at the Ruhrtriennale Summer Festival conducted by Dennis Russell Davies and Publio in a recording of L’Esule di Roma with Opera Rara and the Britten Sinfonia conducted by Carlo Rizzi. In 2022, he took part in L'Academia Rossiniana di Pesaro playing the role of Lord Sidney in Rossini's Il viaggio a Reims. As a member of the RWCMD, his roles included Eisenstein in Die Fledermaus and Count Almaviva in The Marriage of Figaro. Future plans include Chou en-lai in Nixon in China for Staatsoper Stuttgart conducted by André de Ridder and Prunier (baritone version) in a recording of Puccini’s La Rondine with Opera Rara and the BBC Symphony Orchestra, conducted by Carlo Rizzi.
Lluís was a finalist in the 2023 Belvedere Singing Competition, and he won second prize at the Concours de Cant les Corts de Barcelona singing competition in 2020. He has attended music workshops at Royaumont Abbey & Foundation with Stéphane Degout, Alain Planès, Christian Immler, Andreas Frese and Claire Thirion, and has received numerous awards, most recently the Eva Kleinitz Scholarship from Opera Europa.
Lluís has an extensive concert and Oratorio repertoire and has performed Handel’s Messiah, Rutter’s Magnificat and the Mozart, Fauré and Brahms Requiem.
